ABSTRACT

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) started as a small café in Waitsfield, Vermont, in 1981 and quickly became a leader in the specialty coffee industry based on their award-winning coffees, their innovative brewing technology, and their socially responsible business practices. In the midst of all the growth, GMCR recognized that education is an important factor and in 2005 the Continuous Learning Department published its first catalog of courses based on the GMCR principles. GMCR immediately saw the value of the job introduction training (JIT) and thus in the summer of that year began to use the multiplier effect to spread JIT throughout the organization by having in-house trainers. In order to better appreciate how JIT benefits the operations at GMCR, it is useful to understand what those operations are. Trainer Jeff Severidt and Manager Larry Litchfield were working together to implement JIT into the Keurig lines.
