ABSTRACT

America is the land of the second chance-and when the gates of the prison open, the path ahead should lead to a better life.

—George W. Bush

Life in prison has been described as restrictive, regimented, and confining. All of these are true whether you are a worker in a prison or an inmate in a prison; you are all doing time together. It takes a special kind of person to work in a prison. Prison workers are usually dedicated, well trained, and committed to protecting society from those that society has chosen to isolate itself from. On the other hand, prison workers exhibit coping skills, communications and social skills in working with inmates that are superior to many other types of workers. Let us begin our examination of prison life by taking a look at the prison staff.
