The Five Areas Approach The course workbooks use a proven approach that is based on cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT for short). CBT is a kind of ‘talking treatment’ that works well for people with low mood. It’s recommended by the latest UK national treatment guidelines for young people with low mood and depression.

These workbooks help us look in detail at five key areas of our life. The aim is to help the young person to do a Five Areas Assessment. This assessment clearly shows the person the range of problems we may face in each of the five areas that are commonly affected in low mood and depression:
