ABSTRACT
When food is not being moved through the oesophagus, it is kept closed by a two muscular sphincters at its top and bottom as well as by muscular tone along its entire length. Under normal conditions, the stomach contents will not be pushed up into the oesophagus as the lower (gastro-oesophageal) sphincter remains closed unless food is being passed into the stomach.
