ABSTRACT
The growth and development of a fetus are dependent on substances that are supplied via umbilical cord blood. If the mother receives drugs, fetal development can be affected, because the physiological processes in the mother may be altered and because the drug is distributed to the fetus as well. The risk and nature of harm that may occur will vary with the type of drug, duration of use, and dose.
