ABSTRACT

All human interactions have psychodynamic determinants. Whether it is a conversation with the milkman or an intensive psychotherapeutic exchange, unconscious processes influence all interpersonal interactions. The interactions which occur in IPT are no exception to this rule, and in many ways the successful delivery of IPT hinges on the ability of the therapist to understand and manage these psychodynamic processes. This demands a great deal of skill as the time limit used in IPT requires that these processes be recognized and dealt with quickly, and the avoidance of discussion about the therapeutic relationship in IPT requires that they be anticipated and managed well.
