Children and young people in the UK are subject to a potentially confusing combination of legislation according to their stage of development, their maturity, and how they present. Their degree of autonomy and independent participation in the process also vary with the above and other factors. The main legislation in addition to the Mental Health Act 1983 is the Children Act 1989 and also common law/case law.
