ABSTRACT
Since April 2001, all public bodies have had a general duty to work towards the elimination of unlawful racial discrimination and to promote equality of opportunity and good relations between different racial groups (Section 1 of the 2000 Act). This duty applies to all those working within the Mental Health Act 1983. There are also important links with the Human Rights Act 1998, which will be considered below.
