ABSTRACT

Imagine that you have been asked to measure Natalie’s blood pressure. You are meeting her for the first time. How would you establish rapport?

ACTIVITY

Stein-Parbury (2005) suggests that the initial phase of a nurse-patient relationship

is full of uncertainty and there is a need to reduce this. Therefore gaining trust is

essential and can be achieved through learning about each other. For nurses, this

should be within the boundaries of the professional role (NMC 2008a).
