ABSTRACT

Spacers, sometimes referred to as a holding device, can be large (e.g. the Volumatic),

or small (e.g. the Aerochamber). They are often more effective than any other hand-

held inhaler (BTS/SIGN guidelines 2007) and preferred by many patients (Leyshon

2007). The spacer holds the medication that has been released, allowing time for the

drug to be inhaled through a mouthpiece by activating a one-way valve.
