ABSTRACT

Bereavement involves loss: of a person, object or state. Grief is the human emotion of that loss – ‘a reaction of intense pining or yearnings for the object lost’.1 Mourning is the behaviour that expresses grief over the loss. Loss is part of every human life, although the meanings and responses are unique. Each person’s feelings of grief, and their expressions of mourning, will be influenced by the culture and society within which they live.2
