ABSTRACT

Psychiatric and mental health nursing are frequently used interchangeably, but the terms may well not be synonymous (see Chapter 1). Perhaps the level of professional concern relating to such issues reflects the state of flux in the profession. Psychiatric nursing began in institutional care settings1 and has gone through various stages of development, and can be described as part of a dynamic developmental process.
