ABSTRACT

Case Maria worked as a secretary for her whole working life and was happily married with two children who no longer lived at home. She and her husband spent some time at the local pub and two years ago they went and listened to a local rock band there. Maria sat a bit too close to the loudspeakers and after that event she developed constant ringing in her ears (tinnitus). At first she was in shock, but after a while she got more used to it. Now after two years it was still a problem and had even gotten a bit worse. She felt tired and could not work as efficiently as she used to. At the hospital she had been offered some advice and hearing tests, but not much more than that as her hearing was pretty intact. In addition, she was noise sensitive and so never went to the pub when she knew it would be loud. Almost by coincidence she met an old friend on the street one day who talked about his tinnitus and told her that he had now started a treatment on the Internet that was a research project in the local university hospital. Maria contacted the researchers and was called in for an interview. Eventually she received ICBT, which helped her get more used to her tinnitus, although the loudness of the tinnitus remained more or less the same. During the treatment she learned about relaxation and coping, and was able to apply these methods in her daily life.
