ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the challenges associated with the structured methodologies that are used to respond to acts of terrorism, major crime, food safety events, or natural disasters.

Over the past years, we have seen a number of restructurings take place with respect to how nations prepare for certain kinds of major incidents, calamities, or natural disasters. One of these restructurings has resulted in the formation of umbrella departments, such as Public Safety Canada and the Department of Homeland Security. These organizations tend to coordinate and oversee a number of specific efforts that are intended to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, or recover from major events.
