ABSTRACT

There are several areas of the world where maritime piracy remains a threat. These include the Strait of Malacca (the body of water that lies between Malaysia and Indonesia, through which 50,000 ships a year pass) and Singapore Strait; the Arabian Sea; the Indian Ocean, particularly off the coast of Somalia; and the waters off of Bangladesh. Total annual loss to piracy is between $13 billion and $16 billion U.S. dollars per year.
