ABSTRACT

Dictionary definitions of “small towns” invariably include descriptions such as “provincial” and “unsophisticated.” This is such a gross generalization that it is hardly worthy of review; however, perceptions often being the same as or greater than reality, there must be comment. Of course, small towns may, at one time in their respective histories, have been unsophisticated because they were isolated. Larger cities and towns create sufficient demand to attract events, build museums, libraries, and other cultural centers. Such intercourse provides greater opportunities for the growth of culture and sophistication. However, that does not mean that those who live in less-populated areas are somehow less sophisticated than their big city counterparts. In short, urban environments do not necessarily yield more urbane residents.
