ABSTRACT

My previous book (Reinventing Regional and Local Economies, 2011, Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press) cited numerous lessons learned in the course of speaking to 70 mayors and other local officials-elected, appointed, and otherwise-in major cities and metropolitan areas around the United States. The lessons learned from that exercise are summarized below:

1. State of Mind/Advance in the Worst of Times Seventy leaders were interviewed from more than 120 American cities. At the

height of this nation’s worst recession in 80 years, they were overwhelmingly enthusiastic and proud of their cities, their regions, and the response of their citizenry to the economic hardship.
