ABSTRACT

According to the U.S. Department of Education (2000), the National Center for Education Statistics, the deŠnition of operations management is the managing and directing of “the physical and/or technical functions of a Šrm or organization, particularly those relating to development, production, and manufacturing,” and it involves the “principles of general management, manufacturing and production systems, plant management, equipment maintenance management, production control, industrial labor relations and skilled trades supervision, strategic manufacturing policy, systems analysis, productivity analysis and cost control, and materials planning.”2 še leaders of law enforcement organizations may wonder how such a deŠnition is applicable to contemporary policing given its allusions and references to corporate management. However, the contents of this deŠnition are pertinent among both for-proŠt and nonproŠt endeavors involving the various functions of law enforcement entities.
