An undercover investigation or operation is a series of related undercover activities occurring over a period of time that requires undercover law enforcement agents,1 informants, or other persons working with the law enforcement agency to temporarily assume a fictitious role or identity. The operatives conceal their purpose and methods of detecting crime or obtaining evidence from third parties to prosecute those engaged in illegal activities.
