ABSTRACT
The first part of the chapter shows that there was discussion of electric vehicles even at the beginning of the twentieth century. The storage capacity of the battery is still a major issue, although hybrid electrics now recover much of the braking energy instead of dissipating it as heat. The rest of the chapter, which focuses on the need to overcome paradigms and practice continuous improvement (kaizen) is considerably more important.
