ABSTRACT

In an efficient health care system, resources are used to achieve the best value for the money spent.1 When care is delivered inefficiently, resources are used without direct benefit to the patient, which results in waste. At least two ways to improve efficiency exist: (1) reduce waste and (2) reduce administrative or production costs.2 Making care more efficient while maintaining or improving health care quality is an important focus for BHCS. Achieving this goal requires strong collaboration between finance and quality leaders, consistent with the fifth of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Seven Leadership Leverage Points: make the chief financial officer a quality champion.3 BHCS has demonstrated such collaboration between finance and quality leaders for years as part of its longstanding commitment to STEEEP care.
