ABSTRACT

Servanthood (being of service to others) is one of the key BHCS values. Patient centeredness is the fundamental method of facilitating service and achieving trust. Patients need to be actively invited at every encounter, by every caregiver, to (1) participate in their own care; (2) offer their needs, values, preferences; and (3) understand all of their options and the related consequences and commitments before making informed decisions. Important questions that health care systems must address include: How can health care delivery organizations accomplish this alongside highly directive, fast-moving processes that create time urgencies? And, how can they ensure that care is individualized while reaping the patient outcome benefits that can be achieved by applying standardized evidence-based care? BHCS has been addressing these challenges through its longstanding commitment to improving care through patient-centered concepts.
