ABSTRACT

Scott & White Healthcare is a nonprofit collaborative integrated health care system founded in 1897 in Temple, Texas, that is currently one of the nation’s largest multispecialty group practices (see Chapter 9).1 Recently, Scott & White and BHCS announced their intent to merge, creating the largest not-for-profit health system in the state of Texas. Scott & White owns and operates the Scott & White Health Plan, which serves more than 215,000  members in group, individual, and Medicare coverage programs and contracts, with care provided by both Scott & White and independent providers.2 This chapter describes Scott & White’s history, successes, and lessons learned regarding its efforts to drive quality improvement that results in STEEEP care through a health care delivery system owned and operated health care plan.
