ABSTRACT

Phase I is designed to acquaint the organization with the Performance Acceleration Management (PAM) approach to accelerated performance improvement. To accomplish this, most organizations will assign a highlevel Steering Committee to gain understanding of the approaches and to conduct an assessment to determine its application to the needs of the organization (Figure  2.1). Making the decision to apply the PAM methodology in your organization is a major decision that will have a long-term impact on the performance and culture of the organization. Making this commitment must not be given in a haphazard manner because the approach leads to the development of a combined five-year PAM plan that will transform the organization’s culture, reputation, and performance. There are a total of two different activities that make up Phase I:

1. Activity one: Organize for performance acceleration 2. Activity two: Define present status and improvement opportunities

Activity One: Organize for Performance Acceleration

To be realistic, before an organization starts Phase I, someone in the organization had to become interested in the PAM methodology. This usually occurs because an individual has read a book, attended a conference, or worked for another organization that had already implemented the approach. This individual, in turn, must convince key people on the executive team that the organization should, at a minimum, enter into Phase I of the PAM approach to accelerate performance improvement. This individual plays a key role in sponsoring and acting as the champion for the PAM project.
