ABSTRACT

It is used to help identify the critical personnel and their relationship to the success or failure of a change in organization, technology, and political elements inherent in any change.

General

Role mapping is a means of defining the infrastructure to be used in accomplishing a change. The elements involved include:

• Identify the people involved in securing the necessary sponsorship for a change to succeed

• Identify the constituencies affected by the change • Generate a visual picture of the individuals, groups, and interrela-

tionships that must be orchestrated to accomplish the change • Understand the “flow” of how the change will unfold within the

organization • Build a common understanding of the issues, problems, and oppor-

tunities inherent in accomplishing the change

• Represent the political terrain of the change environment that must be addressed when developing the implementation plans

• Better understand the dynamics of influence that may affect the outcome of the change effort

Role mapping is best developed in group discussions among the parties responsible for analyzing, planning, and implementing a change. You should consider using a facilitated session to build the role map.
