ABSTRACT

Lean/RfS-or Lean/Repetitive flexible Supply-is made up of a number of different components. Each of these will be explained in more detail in the sections following this brief history.

Originally, the term used was simply Repetitive flexible Supply, or RfS for short. Lean was added later for two reasons. Firstly, many of the components are the same or very similar to the Lean concepts and principles developed by Toyota. Secondly, most of the companies implementing RfS had had Lean initiatives running for some time. They wanted people to see RfS as a further development in their Lean program, not as just another new initiative. People started to use the term Lean/RfS, and, well, it just stuck.
