ABSTRACT

Workforce management is one of the most important functions of healthcare management. It includes productivity management, which is traditionally in the purview of the management engineer. But the role of the management engineer logically expanded to a broader scope as the healthcare workforce has grown in number and complexity. Labor is the largest and the most variable of an organization’s expense. Therefore, it is often the first and most important target of expense management. It is a ripe application field for the management engineer applying modeling, optimization, process design, and statistical control techniques. This chapter presents the workforce management concept, the ways it can be impacted, and the tools of the management engineer.
