ABSTRACT

In the early chapters of this book I was able to illustrate all the basic principles of psychodynamics by the use of everyday examples or simple case histories, which involved such ordinary human feelings as jealousy, anger, resentment, guilt, and grief. I could show how such feelings are kept at bay by various simple defence mechanisms, and how when these mechanisms break down the feelings may return in a disguised or displaced form. These examples thus illustrated the basic psychodynamic principles of defence, anxiety, hidden feeling, and the return of the repressed, all of which were relatively easily accessible to honest introspection.
