ABSTRACT

In Chapter 18 I wrote of two incompatible statements: that you should not make interpretations until you know what kind of patient you are speaking to; and on the other hand, that you may not be able to find this out without making interpretations. Similarly, in Chapter 20, with the Film Director's Secretary I illustrated the flood of unconscious communication set in motion by a simple understanding comment. Finally, in Chapter 18 I also wrote that, whatever the consequences of your interview, you must take full responsibility for them. The present patient, who has been encountered before in Chapter 16 (see pp. 207ff.), gives point to all these themes.
