ABSTRACT

Criminological research on computer hackers has increased dramatically over the last two decades, driven in large part by either quantitative samples of college students or attendees at conventions, or limited qualitative data sources. These methods provide insight into the theoretical drivers of hacking, though limited information on the practices of active malicious actors in the computer underground. This study argues for the adoption of mixed methods analyses using data generated from multiple online data sources using a social network analysis of multiple Russian hacker groups. Using data triangulation from social network profiles, forums, and other online sources, this study highlights the demographic background of actors, their demonstrated skills, and the structure of social relationships between actors. The unique value of such analysis strategies relative to the ethical and methodological challenges they pose will be discussed in depth.
