ABSTRACT

This interview was conducted at Richwood Correctional Center, in Richwood, Louisiana, between Robert Hanser (the interviewer) and Warden Keith Deville (the inerviewee). Before discussing the interview itself, some overview information regarding corrections in the state of Louisiana will be provided within the following two pages. Later in this chapter, we will focus the remainder of our attention on the interview itself, highlighting input from Warden Deville throughout. In Louisiana, inmates are housed both in state facilities and in local facilities, with sheriff departments and/or private prisons helping to house the state’s offender population. In 2012, there were 18,599 inmates who were housed in approximately 12 state facilities. Another 20,624 inmates were housed in local sheriff’s facilities and/or private prison

facilities throughout the state (LDPSC, 2013). Other inmates are located at separate and specialized assignments (such as the state police barracks) or at contract transitional work facilities throughout the state. As we will see later in this interview, private prisons are a substantial resource in Louisiana, but for now, it is probably just sufficient to point out that in Louisiana, there are 40,170 inmates and nearly half are in state facilities while the other half are housed in a collection of other types of localized or privately owned facilities (LDPSC, 2013).
