ABSTRACT
Very few health care providers follow any kind of commonsense pattern for the acquisition of practices or the incorporation of practices into the overall fabric of care through whatever form of integration is used. The physician-hospital organization (PHO) becomes defined by whichever practices sign up. The medical staff is the pool for recruiting practices to be integrated more formally (purchased), or worse, the practices are engaged when they knock on the door and wish to be acquired.
