ABSTRACT

From an operator’s point of view, the goal from a Lean perspective is to maximize the value-added actions that workers perform in a process, and eliminate or minimize the wasteful actions. In order to accomplish this, we must first understand the actions and activities that workers perform in the process. Similar to a product analysis, the way to accomplish this is through firsthand observation and documentation of operator activities. Continuing the theme of the sandwich-making process from Figure 4.1, an example of an operator analysis is shown in Figure 5.1.
