ABSTRACT

Obesity is defined as the presence of an abnormally high proportion of body fat. This condition poses a serious health risk and is a chronic disease. There is a genetic predisposition that is modified by the environment, lifestyle, or both, and behavior. Obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) found that 55% of US adults were above their ideal weight range: 33% were overweight (body mass index (BMI) 25.0 to 29.9 kg/m2, and 22% were obese (BMI > 30.0 kg/m2)1.
