ABSTRACT

Fingerprints are unique. There are likely no two fingerprints alike anywhere in the world. How do we know that fingerprints are unique? There is no way to compare every fingerprint in the world to every other fingerprint in the world. You may have heard the adage “nature never repeats itself.” If you understand natural variation, and the concept that no

two things in nature are exactly alike, you begin to appreciate the potency of fingerprint evidence. No two ears of corn have the same pattern of kernels. No two zebras have the same pattern of stripes. No two cheetahs have the same pattern of spots. And no two fingerprints have identical configurations of minutiae.
