chapter  2
WILD BOYS: COP-KILLERS IN THEIR EARLY TWENTIES
ILLERS IN WENTIES
Pages 30

In 2011, nine law enforcement officers were murdered in the line of duty by offenders aged twenty to twenty-four. These cases include:

• Daniel Butts, who killed an officer during the attempted theft of a vintage car

• Johnny Simms, who killed two detectives who came to his home to serve a murder warrant

• Alexander Haydel, who murdered an officer he encountered in a stairwell after killing his wife’s ex-husband

• Daniel Tiger, who killed two officers interviewing him about a disturbance involving alcohol

• Dejon White, who murdered a police officer he flagged down after shooting a stranger in the face with a shotgun

• Ryan Heisler, who murdered the officer who responded to assist his probation officer at a home check

• Ross Ashley, who killed an officer who was seated in his patrol car writing a traffic ticket to another motorist

When compared with the teen offenders already examined in Chapter 1, we will begin to see many commonalities in the characteristics and motives of these shooters. However, the outcomes for these offenders were markedly different.
