ABSTRACT
Officer Richard Lowery’s Story A career in law enforcement, as with many first-responder professions, offers a unique view into some of the most extraordinary qualities of humanity. Yet it also provides a dim look into some of its most tragic elements. Years on the job experiencing violence in countless ways, seeing death in so many sad circumstances, and watching seemingly good people do horrible things had indelibly hardened me. Officers often lose a little of themselves through this process, but it is a necessary defense to endure a career protecting and serving our communities. Many years later, I still remember one call that affected me in many ways.
