ABSTRACT

As the United States goes electronic in its infrastructure, the government’s electronic presence is important in improving the nation’s health literacy. The reason why this is the focus of new research by electronic government is because it has impacts on society in its ability to reach a larger amount of people in a shorter period of time, while also providing a variety of messages that can improve the health outcomes of the public. It especially has become a focus in the late 2000s, from legislation discussed in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. Through more informed interactions with government and data provided from government and nongovernment information sources, citizens can improve their awareness, education, and, most importantly, health choices and outcomes.
