ABSTRACT

Neurological conditions not uncommonly affect recreational and elite athletes, while exercise can assist in most cases in minimizing morbidity and medications utilized as treatments can complicate performance. When considering neurological disorders in an active patient population, participating in both recreational and sports activities, a physician may generally divide these disorders into (1) headaches, (2) epilepsy and other seizure-type disorders, (3) concussions and postconcussion syndromes, and (4) chronic pain disorders and nerve entrapments. This chapter focuses on headache, seizure-type disorders, and chronic pain conditions, whereas concussions and sequelae are discussed in Chapter 40 (Table 61.1).
