ABSTRACT

The initial inspiration for studying this topic occurred to me as I was describing my professional status and commented to a group of graduate students that I had “been on the outside” (of SWAT) for about two years. Prisoners have made that comment about their release from incarceration, as have former gang members after being “jumped out.” That quick comment struck me as odd, and it suddenly occurred to me that my informal speech had become infused with criminalistic streetstyle jargon.
