ABSTRACT

The opening quote is attributed to Anne Frank, a victim of the Holocaust. Her famous diary was first published in Dutch in 1947 under the title Het Achterhuis (The Secret House) by her father, Otto Frank, who survived the concentration camps. Her diary provides an account of a teenager living in hiding with seven others in fear for their lives in occupied Holland during World War II. Anne Frank died in 1945, just before her sixteenth birthday, in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (BBC News 2014). President John F. Kennedy discussed Anne Frank in a 1961 speech. He said: “Of all the multitudes who throughout history have spoken for human dignity in times of great suffering and loss, no voice is more compelling than that of Anne Frank” (David 2013).
