ABSTRACT

Dr. Frank Campbell* said that training law enforcement in suicide prevention is imperative. We know it works. The concept is similar to a person drowning. If you train everyone to be a lifeguard, you will have fewer people drown. Police departments across the nation will need to relay the message of suicide prevention to their personnel. We can begin to understand suicide by offering 2-day workshops that would reveal officers at risk with the reality that help can be provided. Dr. Carl Alaimo said that the numbers do not lie. Today, the evidence and the research present that, focusing on law enforcement suicide, the numbers remain significantly higher compared to any other profession. The lack of ongoing educational training increases the stress of the job.
