ABSTRACT

The 65 and over population in the United Kingdom is growing. Over the period 1985 to 2012 the number of people aged 65 and over in the United Kingdom increased by 26 per cent to 10.8 million; in 2012, 17 per cent of the population were aged 65 and over. The number of people aged 85 and over more than doubled over the same period to 1.4 million (Office for National Statistics 2014).
