Singapore: The Red Dot

Singapore is an island as well as a country, but perhaps it is best described as a city-state; it is one of few such entities in the world. The smallest country in Southeast Asia, Singapore is usually depicted on world maps as a red dot located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. The main island has a total land area of 716.1 km2, and one can easily travel across the island in a span of 30 to 40 minutes. Home to slightly more than five million, the density ratio is estimated at 7540 km2.The city features a vibrant mix of high-rise buildings, heritage rich locales, and landscaped gardens. From its humble origins as a fishing village, Singapore has experienced phenomenal economic growth and now commands a presence in the global arena. It continues to thrive as a commerce hub with an estimated gross domestic product per capita of US$51,709. This cosmopolitan city has also strived to achieve world standards in fields such as transportation with its award-winning airport and seaport. This city-state’s multiracial makeup creates a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts, and architecture. Singapore’s diverse demographics consist of four major ethnic groups: the Chinese (the majority), Malays, Indians, and Eurasians; English is the main language of instruction and the medium of communication.
