ABSTRACT

Moxibustion is a word derived from the Japanese word moxa, which refers to a plant that is called “ai ye” in Chinese and Artemisia vulgaris in Latin. Moxibustion is the technique of burning moxa, which is favored over other plants due to the low grade and lasting heat it creates. It is used to treat diseases by applying heat to specific locations on the surface of the body. The application of moxibustion also stimulates capillary blood, lymph, and nerves at the loci, which may have a physiologically beneficial effect in the region of treatment (Figure 39.1).
