ABSTRACT

With our product development value stream clearly identified and efforts underway to remove many of the wastes that had historically plagued Goodyear R&D, such as waiting and overproduction, the Herbie team was ready to turn the Womack Wheel and focus on creating flow and implementing pull. In this chapter, I will tell you about the lean tools we used to do that as well as the many lean R&D principles that must be understood to successfully wield these techniques. Also during this time, the Herbie team truly began to see the fruit of our efforts and gain momentum-and, better yet, many of our early detractors began to believe in lean principles as we did.
