ABSTRACT
Street gangs have become an increasingly major concern for law enforcement agencies. A gang’s impact can have social, political, and economic repercussions. is chapter will present a broad overview of gangs in communities mostly focusing on the metro New York region with additional information for other areas in the United States. is subject matter evolves on a daily basis: their role in society has dramatically changed especially with the advancing technology of the Internet. By using burner cell and smart phones, gangs are able to communicate in ways we never thought possible a decade ago. is chapter will also discuss various ways law enforcement can combat gangs to protect people (children, women, and senior citizens) from victimization.
