ABSTRACT

How has this been accomplished? There are three primary reasons. First, and most importantly, is the fact that more people are regularly wearing seat belts. Survey figures released in 2001 from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that 73 percent of people observed in the front seat of vehicles during the summer of 2001 were wearing seat belts. Seven years ago, only 58 percent were wearing seat belts. In 1970, hardly anyone wore them. It is well documented that people who are thrown clear of a car in an accident usually die, while people who wear seat belts usually live (Figure 23.1).
