ABSTRACT

Introduction In this chapter, the forms of deviance caused not by misconduct but by the physical and mental characteristics of the individual will be explored. The individuals are deviant simply because they are different from others and not because of their actions, beliefs, or conduct. These individuals are considered deviant merely because they are different from the majority in their society. In this chapter, we will focus on four conditions: deviant physical appearance, deviant physical functionality, the developmentally handicapped, and mental illness.
