ABSTRACT

The crime scene investigator receives basic information during the initial notification from either the detective on scene or the communications supervisor and should mentally prepare him or herself before arriving on scene. The prosecutor and defense attorney may review the crime scene log to determine who entered the scene and can request a written statement from every person inside the crime scene. The crime scene investigation begins with the notification call from the communication supervisor, crime scene manager, or major crimes detective. The crime scene investigator is present and will take custody of the evidence that will be signed over on an evidence sheet from the nurse to the crime scene investigator. Photographs are a permanent record of the crime scene in an untouched state. Baseline mapping is a basic form of crime scene mapping but is the least accurate.
